SHERIFF JERKS OUR PRESS CREDENTIAL: Sometime last year, Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman made an appointment with me to give me a laminated card with my picture stating I was a reporter but not a police officer, supposedly to give me access to emergency situations. I actually used it once to photograph the fire at Diamond Jim's in Ukiah. On Friday, July 9 he showed up at my office at 8:00am demanding it back, denouncing me for having sent to our subscribers a tip the Major Crimes Task Force would be eradicating in the Boonville area that day.
Having lost it, I did not surrender it to him then. The following Monday, he sent me a letter again demanding it and stating his office would no longer consider me a journalist.
